Seismic Evaluation & Retrofit of Existing Structures, Structural Health Monitoring & System Identification

A comprehensive seismic assessment and retrofit project where structural health monitoring played a central role in validating the analytical model before intervention decisions were made. Accelerometers were installed across multiple stories to measure ambient response, and the identified modal parameters were used to refine the structural model and ensure it reflected actual building behavior rather than idealized assumptions. Following model validation through measured dynamic properties, nonlinear time history analyses revealed governing deficiencies requiring intervention. Multiple retrofit strategies were evaluated analytically before selecting a solution combining reinforced concrete shear walls for global system enhancement and targeted steel plate strengthening of individual beams to address local shear capacity concerns. This project demonstrates the integration of measurement, analysis, and performance-based decision-making; where monitoring data informed both the assessment and the design of retrofit measures.
